Case Study

On-Site Medical Services Safeguard Lives at a Remote Gas Site in Egypt

Ribbon

Overview

A leading Oil and Gas organisation operating in various remote areas of Egypt, where medical facilities are limited, has confidently partnered with International SOS to deliver exceptional on-site medical services, aiming to minimise health and safety risks and ensure seamless business operations. A recent medical emergency at one of their remote sites underscored the profound importance of immediate medical care in these locations. The timely response successfully managed the incident and provided invaluable insights, paving the way for improved emergency preparedness and response strategies in the future.

Problem

Our client's oil and gas facility is located in a remote area and they are supported by International SOS for comprehensive medical support on-site.
A critical incident recently occurred when a worker began feeling unwell during his shift. He promptly visited the site clinic, where our medical team discovered that he was experiencing a very rapid heartbeat. In situations like this, swift medical assistance is crucial, as any delay in treatment could lead to cardiac arrest.

Solution

Our doctor and nurse, both trained in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), and Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS), responded immediately to the emergency. Within a few minutes, they administered essential first aid and stabilised the patient. The client’s dedicated emergency response plan, developed and implemented by our health experts, was also activated. The employee was transported via the site ground ambulance to the nearest appropriate hospital for advanced care. Pre-arranged protocols and direct communication with local medical facilities facilitated this rapid ground evacuation.

Our medical team maintained close contact with the hospital throughout the patient's treatment and recovery and continuously monitored his progress. They provided regular updates to the client and ensured the employee had a smooth transition back to work.

Impact

  • Life Saved Through Rapid Intervention: The immediate on-site medical care provided by the International SOS team was crucial in preventing potentially fatal complications. This underscores the importance of having 24/7 medical support readily available in remote environments.

  • Seamless Care Continuity and Single Point of Contact: From initial stabilisation to ground evacuation, hospital liaison, and return-to-work support, International SOS provided continuous care and acted as a single point of contact for the client, minimising their administrative burden during a stressful situation.

  • Minimised Operational Disruption and Rapid Return to Work: Thanks to the prompt intervention and adequate follow-up care, the patient was able to return to work within one week. This minimised lost time and prevented significant disruption to the client's operations, demonstrating the tangible return on investment of on-site medical services.
